What is the Basic Skills Assessment Test?
The Basic Skills Assessment is a test that
measures a student’s reading, writing and math academic skill
level.
Who must take the Basic Skills Assessment
Test?
Prior to registering for classes, the following
students must take the assessment test in reading, writing
and mathematics:

New students (first time attending college); or
·
Any student currently enrolled in high school; or
·
Any student under the age of 16; or
·
Any student enrolling in a General Education course
for the first time.
·
Any student registering for the first time in a
reading, writing, or mathematics course.
How will the results be used?
Results help the student and Student Support
Specialist select appropriate classes.
The student can enroll in a class that he/she will feel
comfortable in, but yet challenged to learn something new.
Where do I take the Assessment Test?
The assessment is a computer based assessment
and can be taken at TOCC Central Campus. A student must be enrolled in TOCC and show a photo ID before testing.
Times
Appointments are not necessary, but encouraged.
Please allow at least three hours to take the assessments.
Call the Academic Advising office at TOCC for an appointment.
Special Accommodations
Special Accommodations for qualified disabled
students, such as extended time, large print, writing assistants
and interpreters, are available, contact
the Vice President of Student Services office at (520) 383-8401.
Preparation
To prepare students for the basic skills
assessments, a student may wish to study and review a study booklet,
available in the TOCC bookstore.
Is there a charge for taking the Assessment?
The assessment is free of charge.
Group Testing (non-computer based testing)
Request for group testing can be done at
the various TOCC sites. There
must be a minimum of five students for group testing.

To register for General Education Curriculum
(AGEC) classes, all students must meet one of the following reading
requirements:

Test higher than REA 091, Reading Improvements II
on the TOCC assessments; or
·
Complete the REA 091 with a grade of “C” or higher;
or
·
Concurrently enroll in REA 091 and General Education
courses; or
·
Concurrently enroll in REA 081, Reading Improvements
I and one General Education course.
AGEC classes are transfer courses that meet the program requirements
at Arizona’s public universities (NAU, ASU, UOFA) or other community
colleges.
