Our mission is to enhance the
unique Tohono O’odham Himdag by strengthening individuals, families,
and communities through holistic, quality higher education services.
– TOCC Mission
Statement
Both community colleges and tribal colleges seek to provide
education and training in direct response to local needs. We at
Tohono O’odham Community College strive to balance the goal of
preserving and furthering the Tohono O’odham language and culture
with the goal of providing the 21st century skills necessary to
succeed in higher education and the job market. The College’s
commitment to strengthening families and communities can be found in
TOCC’s numerous teacher training, childcare, and social service
programs. Ultimately, the College seeks to contribute to the
revitalization of the Tohono O’odham language, the richness of the
Tohono O’odham Himdag, and the sustainability of the local Sonoran
environment. The College’s new Agriculture and Natural Resources
program is one example of progress toward making our mission
statement a reality.
The College’s mission includes helping all TOCC students, regardless
of background, to understand and appreciate Tohono O’odham culture.
For this reason, all students are required to complete the Tohono
O’odham Himdag Requirement by taking a Tohono O’odham history and
culture class and a Tohono O’odham language class.
Tohono O’odham Community
College’s vision is to become the Tohono O’odham Nation’s center for
higher education.
– TOCC Vision
Statement
The College seeks to serve the Tohono O’odham Nation by offering
education and training, or “programs of study,” in response to
community needs. Students are welcome to enroll in individual
classes at TOCC, but there are important advantages to declaring a
program of study. Students who declare a program of study may
benefit from scholarships or grants and be able to participate in
internships and other opportunities unavailable to students who have
not declared a program of study. For these reasons, TOCC has built
“declaring a program of study” into step 5 of the enrollment
process. Please see chapters 2 and 4 of the College Catalog
2008-2010 for additional information.
Most of TOCC’s programs require that students take General Education
courses. General Education provides a core set of skills necessary
to succeed in school and life: critical thinking, clear writing,
social analysis, historical perspective, scientific inquiry, and
mathematical abilities. These skills are taught using both academic
course content and practical applications.
The program checklists in the Programs part of the website present
the most efficient, but not the only, approach to completing a
program of study at TOCC. Chapter 7 of the College Catalog 2008-2010
provides course descriptions as well as a listing of prerequisites
and other course-specific information for alternate curriculum
choices. Chapter 4 of the catalog explains the academic policies and
requirements for all programs. If a student has a particular career
in mind, or a particular undergraduate major, then the program
checklists should be adapted to meet the student’s goals. |
